The letter recognizes Nancy Morejón as "a true, one of the great female voices of Latin American poetry," who "has been committed for years to the struggle for peace, against racism and social, racial, gender inequalities and for the freedom of peoples."
The Cuban poet Nancy Morejón, National Prize for Literature, accepted to be the godmother of the first Film Festival of the Caribbean nation in the town of Vitry-sur-Seine, in France.
This was announced today to the Prensa Latina agency, the president of the association Cuba Coopération France (CubaCoop), Víctor Fernández, who said that he considers Morejón's presence an act of reparation to Cuban intellectual and culture, after the decision of the Paris Poetry Market to withdraw her status as honorary president due to external pressures.
Fernández stressed that the participation of the Cuban poet, editor, translator and academic will be a source of pride and an opportunity for her to dialogue with intellectuals, friends of the island and the general public.
The decision of the Paris Poetry Market needed a response, he stressed, adding that this gesture by CubaCoop goes in that direction.
Nancy Morejón will be at the opening and various activities of the Vitry-sur-Seine film festival, in the Paris Region (from June 17 to 24), a meeting that according to the president of CubaCoop is aspired to systematize, in coordination with local authorities.
The announcement of the association, enrolled in the last three decades in socioeconomic development projects on the island, adds to signs of rejection of the measure that was the result of pressure from anti-Cuban sectors in France, says the PL office.
Other actions of solidarity with Morejón have been a petition launched by the coordinator for France and Europe of the World Poetry Movement, Francis Combes, a letter from the France-Cuba Friendship Group of the National Assembly to the organizers of the Market, a complaint at Unesco and an evening this Tuesday at the Cuban embassy.
Poetry is future and peace, therefore, Nancy and Cuban culture also represent those values that no one can silence, Fernandez warned.
The Cuban film festival of Vitry-sur-Seine will feature the films Benny, Fresa y Chocolate, El Mayor, Conducta, Esther en alguna parte and Boccaccerías Habaneras.
In addition, exhibitions will be held and on the final day, a meeting of solidarity with the largest of the Antilles and against the US economic, commercial and financial blockade.
