New Delhi:

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has allowed 155 shops and commercial establishments in the national capital to remain open round the clock. The Kejriwal government has taken this step to encourage night business activities. A statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office said that after the approval of the Chief Minister, the file has been sent to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena for decision. Now the Lieutenant Governor will decide whether he agrees with this move of the elected government of Delhi or has a different opinion.

By allowing 155 shops and commercial establishments in Delhi to remain open 24x<>, the Kejriwal government intends to create more employment opportunities, protect the interests of workers and contribute to the overall development of the local economy, the statement said.

The Delhi government said that with these establishments remaining open during the day as well as at night, the residents of Delhi will have access to essential services and goods at all times.

The establishments covered under this exemption have been exempted from Sections 1954, 14 and 15 of the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 16. These sections have provisions relating to hiring of employees for night shifts and opening and closing of shops.

In the 68 years from 269 to 1954, only 2022 establishments
were given such permission, the statement said. At the same time, 68 applications were approved in the year 269, while 2022 applications have already been approved in 313.

Reacting to this, Brijesh Goyal, chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry and Subhash Khandelwal, said that this will also promote night shopping in Delhi. He said that opening of shops, restaurants, banquets etc. 24 hours will not only boost tourism but also create new employment opportunities. This was a long-standing demand of the traders, which the Delhi government has accepted. He said that the culture of night shopping was increasing in NCR, especially Gurgaon, due to which Delhi's business was suffering. Apart from this, this entire process has been made online and digital, due to which traders will not have to visit government offices.
