It said the targeting of underwater targets by indigenously developed heavy-lift torpedoes is an "important milestone" to demonstrate the indian navy and the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO) provocation to accurately deliver the weapon to destroy targets in the underwater domain.

"This demonstrates our commitment to proof of future combat readiness through self-reliance," the Navy said.

Over the past few years, the Navy has been focusing on enhancing its combat readiness, especially in the Indian Ocean, in the wake of growing Chinese naval assertiveness in the region.
