According to a survey of citizens in eight Central and Eastern European states, only 40% of people in Slovakia believe in Russia's attack on Ukraine. The figure in Bulgaria is higher, but not the same as it was in 2022. There, 46% of Bulgarians believe that it was Russia that started the war.

This is evidenced by the survey data of the Slovak analytical organization GLOBSEC.

The sociological research was carried out in 8 countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The data were compared with the results of last year's similar survey. It covered Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria and Slovakia.

Over the year, in most of the studied countries, the share of those who agree that Russia is primarily responsible for the full-scale war in Ukraine has increased or remained almost unchanged.

Only one state in 2022 supported the opposite view. In Hungary, 48% of citizens believed in the initiation of the Russian Federation. In 2023, Hungarian society has noticeably changed its mind, 54% of Hungarians believe in Russia's groundless attack.

However, the indicators of two other states – Slovakia and Bulgaria – turned out to be catastrophic.

In Bulgaria, faith in Russia's blame for the attack on the Ukraine fell from 50% to 46%, in Slovakia the dynamics are even more pessimistic. There, the figure fell from 51% to 40% and became the lowest among the studied countries.

We will remind, the President of Slovakia fears a pro-Russian revenge in the country. After all, the candidate for prime minister Robert Fico is known for his pro-Russian position. He accused Western allies of "supporting the killings" in Ukraine.
