The National Regeneration Movement (Morena), of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, won this Sunday, with its candidate Delfina Gómez, the governorship of the State of Mexico, which with its 17,000,000 inhabitants is the most populous in the Latin American country.

The Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM), in releasing the results of the quick count, reported that Gómez had an upper limit of 54.2 percent of the votes cast and a lower limit of 52.1 percent.

The candidate Alejandra del Moral, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), a political group that had maintained power for more than 90 years in the State of Mexico, meanwhile, registered a percentage of votes of 45.2 and 43 percent, respectively.

The president of the IEEM, Amalia Pulido, said at a press conference that citizen participation was between 48.7 and 50.2 percent of the electoral roll.

After the dissemination of these data, Del Moral gave a press conference where he acknowledged that the preliminary results "do not favor me," while sending a congratulations "to the teacher Delfina Gómez, who will be the next governor of the State of Mexico."

Meanwhile, Gomez said on his Twitter account that "the transformation begins today in the State of Mexico" and thanked all his supporters. "We won together and so we will build together a prosperous and dignified future for Mexicans," he said.

In the other election that took place this Sunday, in the state of Coahuila, in northern Mexico, the PRI candidate, Manolo Jiménez, won the state governorship with a wide advantage over the candidate of Morena, Armando Guadiana.

In the last three years Morena has gained power in the states of Baja California Sur, Campeche, Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Nayarit, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa, Sonora, Tlaxcala and Zacatecas (in 2021); Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Tamaulipas (in 2022) and this year the State of Mexico.
