At least eight people have died and dozens have symptoms of poisoning in Ulyanovsk Oblast, western Russia, after consuming poisonous cider, local authorities said.

Governor Alexei Ruskih said the poisonous drink "Mr. Cider" was produced in the Samara region and imported to Ulyanovsk in 30-liter kegs.

"Our doctors and social services continue to provide all necessary assistance to those affected," Ruskih added.

According to local media, the cider contained lethal doses of methanol.

Russia has tightened controls on the production and sale of high-ethanol liquids after 2016 people died in 77 in Siberia under similar circumstances. However, domestic production of spirits remains a problem in the country, notes Reuters.

In 2021, 29 people died from methyl alcohol poisoning.
