The self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said he had always called Russia's Kaliningrad region "his own."

The dictator said this at a meeting with the Russian governor of this region.

Lukashenko noted that it was Belarus that was responsible for the Kaliningrad region during Soviet times.

"I always give an example that I remember very well: Belarus in the Soviet Union, so to speak, was responsible for the Kaliningrad region. That's why I always called it my own. I was afraid that the Russians would not think that we were there claiming to seize the Kaliningrad region. Although, probably, it would be no worse if the Kaliningrad region were closer to Belarus. I am a Soviet person – I know what the Kaliningrad region meant to Belarus. Nobody separated Belarus and the Kaliningrad region," the dictator said.

Recall that Poland renamed the Russian city of Kaliningrad and the Kaliningrad region to Królewiec and the Krulevets region. After that, Poland began to install new road signs with a new name Kaliningrad – Krulevets.

The Kremlin calls Poland's decision to rename Kaliningrad and the region "madness."

Earlier, Czech MEP Tomas Zdechovsky shared a satirical joke on his Twitter, which refers to the division of the Russian Kaliningrad region between Poland and the Czech Republic.
