A public interest litigation has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding the train accident in Balasore, Odisha. The petition has sought the constitution of a Commission of Inquiry headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to probe the Odisha train accident on June 2, 2023. The petition has been filed by Supreme Court lawyer Vishal Tiwari.

It has been said in the petition that the commission should submit its report in the court within two months. The petition has also sought setting up of an expert commission headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, comprising technical members, to analyse and review and suggest current risk and safety parameters in the railway system.

Guidelines for implementation of Automated Train Protection (ATP) system called Armour Protection System in Indian Railways with immediate effect to ensure public safety should be issued. Guidelines should be made to ensure rail safety.
