Ncp chief Sharad Pawar on Friday demanded that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw resign after friday's tragic train accident in Odisha.

"When Lal Bahadur Shastri was the railway minister, an accident happened and it happened again. After that, Jawaharlal Nehru was against the decision to resign. But Shastri said it was my moral responsibility and resigned. Then the country faced the same incident, so politicians should take possible steps."

Pawar expressed grief over the horrific train accident in Odisha's Balasore. So far 288 people have lost their lives in the devastating train accident, while more than 1,000 people have been injured.

A preliminary report on the tragedy said the three-way accident involved the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, Coromandel Express and the goods train that was parked at Bahanaga Bazar station in Balasore district. It said 17 coaches of the two trains derailed and were severely damaged in the accident on Friday evening.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the spot on Saturday to take stock of the situation, said that instructions have been given to investigate the train accident in Odisha's Balasore, in which more than 260 passengers died. Whoever is found guilty will not be spared.
