This Sunday the list of 23 players who will represent Cuba in the commitments corresponding to the FIFA dates of June was known. In the selected highlights the youth, with several players of the squad U-20 that participated in the World Cup qualifiers last year.
However, this is a squad with competitive experience, because most of its players play in professional clubs. In addition, the base is the same that managed to move up in the level in the 2022-2023 Concacaf Nations League and qualify for the Gold Cup.
On this occasion, coach Pablo Elier Sánchez called up Romario Torres, champion of the 106th National Football League and chosen as the best player of the same, without yet reaching 20 years of age.
Torres recently joined the discipline of the Uruguayan League club Nacional and is listed as one of Cuba's most talented players in the midfield.
The other novelty in the team is the incorporation of striker Aldair Ruiz, with excellent performance in the Gibraltar League.
Once again Sanchez relies on the right-back Greibel Palma and the Santiago midfielder Eduardo Hernández, who along with Neisser Sandó and Roberney Caballero appear as the only players in the Cuban national championship.
"We must say that not necessarily these 23 players will participate in the Gold Cup later this month. Clearly, here is the basis of the team. The friendlies will serve to evaluate specific needs and individual performance," said Miguel Ángel Díaz, secretary general of the Cuban Football Association.
The Cuban national team will play friendlies against their counterparts in Chile and Uruguay on June 11 and 20.
"We will have the opportunity to evaluate specific performances to determine the players most willing to start in the upcoming Concacaf Gold Cup and this will also serve to rehearse schemes and tactically match the team," said the coach of the national team referring to friendly matches.
"We have called on this occasion a heterogeneous group, but very talented. We will have the opportunity to test these players against two teams of great rigor and this will be an excellent preamble for the coming commitment, "added Sanchez.
The team consists of goalkeepers Sandy Sánchez, Raiko Arozarena and Nelson Johnston. Among the defenders are also Mario Peñalver, Modesto Méndez, Carlos Vázquez, Dariel Morejón, Yosel Piedra and Jorge Luis Corrales, in addition to the aforementioned Palma.
Captain Aricheell Hernández leads the midfield along with Yunior Yuri Pérez, Carlos Denilson and the aforementioned Torres, Caballero and Sandó.
Finally, along with debutant Aldair Ruiz, Maykel Reyes, William Pozo, Daniel Díaz, Yasnier Matos and Luis Javier Paradela stand out on the attack front.
