Cape Town:

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said when a person goes out of the country, certain things happen "beyond politics". Jaishankar's remarks came after former Congress president Rahul Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government several times during his recent visit to the US. Addressing an Indian diaspora event in Cape Town after attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting, Jaishankar said he can talk about himself and does not indulge in politics while travelling abroad.

In response to a question, the External Affairs Minister said, "Look, I said I can only talk about myself, I try not to do politics when I go abroad."

"I am fully prepared to have a vigorous debate in our country," he said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the BJP while addressing a gathering of overseas Indians in the US. In his address, Gandhi also accused the ruling BJP in India of "threatening" people and "misusing" the country's agencies. "India is not what is being projected in the media, which likes to promote a political discourse that is far from reality.
