A weakened tropical storm Mauar has brought heavy rains to Japan's main southern islands after it swept through Okinawa and injured several people.

Residents of vulnerable areas have been warned of the possibility of flooding and mudslides, and dozens of local flights for the day have been cancelled.

Strong winds continue to blow in Okinawa, injuring eight people. In the city of Nishihara, an elderly woman suffered a serious head injury in a fall, but the other injuries are milder.

Former Typhoon Mauar had winds reaching speeds of up to 90 kilometers per hour as it passed over the Pacific Ocean, the Japan Meteorological Service said.
