Seven people were detained in Istanbul this morning in an operation against the Islamic State jihadist group, Turkey's Anka news agency reported.

Raids were carried out at 12 addresses in seven neighborhoods of the metropolis.

According to a statement from the Istanbul Police Directorate, counter-terrorism forces have taken action against suspects who have been found to have carried out activities for the benefit of the group, being in contact with conflict zones, and pose a threat to Turkey.

Turkey has "neutralized" more than 37,800 terrorists since 2015.

Police raids were carried out simultaneously this morning. The seven detainees are under investigation.
