Zanzibar's president, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, has said he is not ready to protect the embezzlers of public property.

He has promised the Regulator and Auditor-General's (CAG) Report for 2021/2022 will be read publicly on Saturday and those responsible will be held to account.

Speaking to reporters at the White House yesterday, he said that was his position and he was the one who initiated the process of reading the report publicly when he took office two years ago.

He said he had done so to make clear the performance of the public servants entrusted with executive duties, where the aim is to build good governance and public financial discipline.

Dr Mwinyi made the clarification after being asked that he had already been handed the CAG report two weeks ago but it had not been read publicly as was the original procedure he had introduced when he took office to read the report.

He said there are two steps to be taken in implementing the CAG report, including administrative ones, which are to remove the perpetrator from his position.

He also mentioned another procedure which is to prosecute a criminal offence based on allegations of embezzlement of public property against the perpetrator.

He said there were other stages where the report was sent to the House of Representatives and dealt with by the House Public Accounts Committee, which has already been read to the House of Representatives after the Speaker has been handed over.

He said that some senior government officials have already been taken into account, including suspension and removal from their positions.

Dr Mwinyi said his government is committed to development, including implementing the construction of the port of Mangapwani in North Zanzibar Region in the status of an integrated port.

He said they intended for the project to be container sites, oil and gas storage areas and free economic zones for investment.

He said the government was still looking for investors who would invest in the area and make Mangapwani a port city.

He said Omani investors had not withdrawn yet and the work to find more investors to carry out the massive project was underway.

He urged the public to ignore opponents who are beginning to be frustrated by the pace of progress being made by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar (SMZ) Phase Eight in various sectors including infrastructure and road construction.

He said in the first year of his tenure opponents were questioning his performance and cited the government's failure to implement development projects.

Referring to his trip to Qatar where he attended the Doha International Trade and Investment Summit, representing the President of the United Republic, Samia Suluhu Hassan, he said it was a great success.

He said some major international organizations have expressed interest in investing in various major sectors including the blue economy in tourism, oil and gas and fisheries.

He said Qatar is a popular oil and gas producer with local companies showing interest in research, oil production and finance.

In addition, he said through the Investment Authority (ZIPA) it has announced investment incentives including investment projects in small islands located in Zanzibar and Pemba.
