After the impact of the heavy rains that affected the area of Iguará, in the northern municipality of Yaguajay, last Friday, May 26, more than 18 meters of railway track were damaged on the northern line of Sancti Spíritus.

The head of the Base Business Unit (UEB) Roads and Bridges Sancti Spiritus, Luis Acosta Cabrera, told the newspaper Escambray that the severe landslide caused by water currents occurred in the area of a culvert, at kilometer 84,800, where the undercut reaches six meters high.

"It is an affectation of magnitude, at a point where long ago there was a bridge, later replaced by a sewer, which apparently did not have the capacity to assimilate the avenue of water," said the specialist.

On the other hand, it warns that the disabling of the northern line does not cause major setbacks to rail circulation at the moment, given that the motor car that covers the Jarahueca-Perea route is not currently circulating due to breakage, nor is traffic reported from other trains of national interest.

However, it is a line that, beyond its strategic layout, by linking the areas of Nuevitas and Morón with Santa Clara, also fulfills the function of auxiliary route in the event of any interruption that occurs in the central railway.

Likewise, the executive said that taking into account this relevance and that historically it has been a line little affected by damages of this type, to restore the landslide the immediate solution would be to build a bridge.

"Making another investment is for pleasure, the waters showed what can happen there and it is an escape route that the central railway has, so it should not be disabled," he said.
