New Delhi:

South Africa will host the BRICS summit this August. But the big question was that how will the President or Foreign Minister of Russia participate in it because the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against them. South Africa is part of it and that was the question before them. However, what he has broken now is that all the international guests who come to participate in it have been given diplomatic immunity. It also includes Russian President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials. This news has come from the local media. According to officials, this is a normal process.

In fact, this immunity that protects against arrest is under the United Nations Convention. Both the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, 1946 and the Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the Specialized Agencies, 1947 provide that it can be applied for participation in any meeting or conference. This is what South Africa has done through a gazette notification.

The Hague-based International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for President Putin in March 2023 on charges of war crimes in Ukraine. The BRICS foreign ministers' meeting in Cape Town is scheduled for June 1-2 and will be attended by Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov. While the meeting of heads of state is from 22-24 August. According to Russia, it will have representation at the appropriate level in this. BRICS is a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
