French President Emmanuel Macron has said Russian dictator Vladimir Putin may not be sent to a court in The Hague, where he will be tried for war crimes if he turns out to be the only person with whom it will be possible to negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

He stated this during a speech at a conference of EU leaders in Moldova, informs The Gardian.

"If in a few months we have the opportunity for negotiations [between Ukraine and Russia], then the issue will be between the court and negotiations, and you will have to negotiate with those leaders who are de facto, and I think that negotiations will be a priority," Macron said.

The French President noted that there may be such a situation when Ukraine will face a choice: "I want you to go to jail, but you are the only one with whom I can negotiate."

He said Russia has lost all legitimacy, but if a future Ukrainian counteroffensive fails to achieve its military objectives, the nature of future European support for Ukraine will need to be assessed.

At the same time, he noted that Ukraine protects not only its borders, but also European ones.

Macron also announced the consistency of US policy towards Ukraine, but said that the EU should strengthen its defense capabilities in preparation for the possible election of the head of the White House representative of the Republican Party.

We will remind, earlier it was reported that French President Emmanuel Macron said that Paris should have paid more attention to the words of Eastern European countries, which warned about Russia's aggressive intentions.

In addition, we previously reported that French President Emmanuel Macron said that Western countries should provide Ukraine with "tangible and reliable security guarantees".
