During a meeting of the National Security Commission on Tuesday, China's President Xi Jinping said: "We must be prepared for worst-case scenarios and extreme scenarios, be aware of potential dangers, and be ready to withstand the great test of strong winds, choppy waters and even dangerous storms."

He called for modernizing China's national security system and capability, and preparing "for actual combat and facing practical problems."

He also noted that "the complexity and severity of the national security problems" facing the Asian giant "have increased dramatically."

The meeting stressed the importance of improving the management of network data security and artificial intelligence.

One outcome of the meeting was the adoption of "guidelines to accelerate the construction of a risk monitoring and early warning system for national security" and "guidelines to strengthen broad public education on national security."
