(CNN) -- Nine people were injured Monday near a boardwalk in Hollywood Beach, Florida, according to a spokesman for the Hollywood Police Department.
Police have taken into custody a person of interest but are still searching for an additional suspect, Hollywood Police Department spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi told reporters.
According to Bettineschi, who spoke at a news conference Monday night, police responded at 6:42 p.m. to a call of several injured people near Johnson Street.
"The preliminary investigation reveals that there was an altercation between two groups that resulted in gunfire," he added.
All nine people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals, Bettineschi said.
