NCERT removes word 'Khalistan' from book

New Delhi: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has removed words like 'Khalistan' and 'separate country for Sikhs' from the CBSE class 12 textbooks. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the objections coming from the Sikh community. After this decision of NCERT, now these two parts will be removed from the 12th class political science book. NCERT said about its decision that before reaching any decision, we had formed an expert committee. We have taken this decision only after the suggestion received from them.

NCERT issued a statement

The NCERT also issued a statement on the removal of parts like Khalistan and the demand for a separate nation for Sikhs from the book. NCERT said that under the sub-heading 'Punjab', the line from the last sentence of the third paragraph is '... But it can also be understood as a plea for a separate Sikh nation," he said, dropped. Just before this line, the statement made has been rewritten as 'the resolution was a plea to strengthen federalism in India'. In the same section (sub-heading 'Punjab'), from the last sentence of the fourth paragraph, '... And the creation of Khalistan has been removed.

Accused of hurting sentiments of Sikh community

SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami had said last month that the National Council of Educational Research and Training had presented a "misleading information" about the Anandpur Sahib proposal titled 'Regional Aspirations' in Chapter 8 of its book 'Politics in India Sonce Independence'. It has hurt the sentiments of the community.

Also mentioned in the 1973 resolution

Explaining the 1973 resolution, he said it talks about strengthening the rights of the state and the federal structure. Dhami had said that portraying Sikhs as separatists was not appropriate at all, so NCERT should remove such highly objectionable comments. He claimed that the communal aspect has been taken care of by removing some old information and adding some new information in the Class 12 syllabus.
