The five men who were detained yesterday, in cooperation with the other members of the network living in Turkey, allegedly did not stop migrants from the neighboring country from passing through the Maritsa River (Evros) in at least twelve cases.

The Ministry of Citizens' Protection in Athens said large sums of cash had been seized from the homes of border policemen.

Border police have been arrested on charges of bribery of an official, abuse of power, breach of duty and violation of the immigration and social integration code.

Official figures show that Greek border police prevented more than 260,000 illegal crossings of the European Union's external border near the Evros River along the border between Greece and Turkey last year.

Migrants and refugees fleeing war and poverty trying to reach the EU often try to cross from Turkey to Greece first, with some trying to avoid official registration to apply for asylum elsewhere in Europe.
