The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday won the by-elections to two legislative council seats in Uttar Pradesh, defeating rival Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath congratulated the two BJP candidates for the victory.

Bjp's Manvendra Singh, who emerged victorious, secured 280 votes and his Samajwadi Party rival Ram Jatan Rajbhar got 115 votes, Returning Officer Mohammad Mushahid told PTI. Similarly, the winning BJP's Padmasen Chaudhary got 279 votes and his rival Ramkaran of the SP got 116 votes. One vote each from both the parties was declared invalid, he said.

According to the strength of the BJP candidates in the assembly, the victory of the BJP candidates was almost certain. Voting was held for two seats that fell vacant due to the resignation of MLC Laxman Acharya and the death of Banwari Lal Dohre. The BJP has fielded Manvendra Singh and Padmasen Chaudhary, while the Samajwadi Party has fielded Ram Jatan Rajbhar and Ramkaran Nirmal.

Laxman Acharya was made the Governor of Sikkim some time ago. Acharya's tenure was till January 2027 and Dohre's tenure was till July 2028, 11. The notification for the bypolls to the two seats was issued on May 18 and May <> was the last day for filing nominations.
