German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrives in Lithuania on Monday, during which he will meet with the German military stationed in the country.

According to the presidential office, the visit is aimed at showing Lithuania that Germany is fulfilling its commitments to NATO and treats the security of its Baltic partner as its own security.

During the visit, Steinmeier will be accompanied by relatives of 12 of the German soldiers in Lithuania in gratitude for their service.

In response to the growing Russian threat, NATO established an "enhanced forward presence" in Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland in 2017. Germany leads a multinational battle group in Lithuania and currently has nearly 800 troops there.
