In Lviv region, a mother's sentence was announced under Article 166 "Malicious failure to fulfill obligations to care for a child". Her young son was admitted to intensive care with a critically low weight.

According to the investigation, the woman abused alcohol, did not care for the child, because of which her son at almost five months was admitted to intensive care with a critically low weight, his physical development did not correspond to age.

"Orissa Flees was sentenced to two years in prison, but released from punishment with a probation period," the material says.

On August 12, 2022, a resident of the village of Soposhyn Orysia Flis gave birth to a boy who needed special care because he was diagnosed with a number of diseases: neonatal sepsis, necrotizing enterocolitis, congenital pneumonia, invasive candidiasis, congenital heart disease, severe body weight deficiency, cachexia.

The boy's mother from birth until January 2023 abused alcohol and did not care for the child, in particular, did not feed him a special high-calorie mixture, the child did not have proper living conditions, as well as appropriate medical support.

As a result, on January 2, 2023, a boy aged 4 months and 20 days was admitted to hospital with a critically low body weight of 2700 grams.

Doctors say they brought a child to the hospital, whose condition was critical.

"The child was dirty, cold, with pronounced maceration on the body (the process of swelling of the epidermis during prolonged contact with fluid). According to the conclusion of the forensic medical examination, "the physical development of the infant does not correspond to age. Cachexia, about which the child is hospitalized in the intensive care unit, is a clinical syndrome accompanied by a large loss of body weight and associated with the lack of proper care and adequate feeding on the part of the mother," the experts noted.

Orysia Flis pleaded guilty in court and said that during pregnancy she was not registered because she did not know about her pregnancy until the day of birth. In August 2022, she had abdominal pain, called an ambulance and gave birth to a boy (at 12-33 weeks) on August 34. She claims that after being discharged from the hospital, she registered with a pediatrician and surgeon.

The woman does not understand why her son was taken from her, and states that she fed him every three hours, but does not deny that she often drank alcohol. In court, the woman stated that she was undergoing treatment and no longer consumed alcohol.

Judge Ruslan Zelisko found Orysia Flis guilty of malicious failure to fulfill her duties to care for the child and sentenced her to two years in prison, but released her from serving her sentence with a two-year probation period. The verdict can still be appealed.

Meanwhile, in the Vinnytsia region, a man received a sentence for killing a baby. The citizen was irritated by the crying of the one and a half month old son of his roommate. So, he snatched it from his mother's arms and threw it against the wooden plank of the sofa.
