During the inspection of a batch of tomatoes imported from Turkey, specialists of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection found a South American tomato moth in a live state.

This was reported by the Main Department of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection in Odesa region.

In a consignment weighing almost 22 tons from Turkey, a quarantine organism was found to be limited in Ukraine – the South American tomato moth (Tuta absoluta Meyr), a caterpillar in a living state.

South American tomato moth belongs to the List of regulated pests A-2 (Quarantine organisms limited in Ukraine). This is a type of harmful organism that, in case of introduction or limited spread on the territory of Ukraine, can cause significant damage to plants and plant products.
