New Delhi: The Academic Council of Delhi University on Friday passed a resolution to remove a chapter on Pakistan's national poet Muhammad Iqbal from the political science syllabus. Born in Sialkot in undivided India in 1877, Iqbal wrote the famous song 'Saare Jahan Se Achcha'. He is often credited with giving the idea of Pakistan.

The chapter titled 'Modern Indian Political Thought' is part of the sixth semester syllabus of BA, officials said. The matter will now be placed before the executive council of the university, which will take a final decision, he said. A member of the academic council said, "A proposal was brought regarding changes in the syllabus of political science. As per the proposal, there was a chapter on Iqbal, which has been removed from the syllabus."

Meanwhile, the Rss-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) welcomed the development.
