At least 10 people were killed and 15 others injured after a large avalanche hit a community in Astore Valley, in Pakistan's northern Gilgit-Baltistan region that connects to Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

Most of the victims were nomads who brought their cattle from the province of Punjab to graze in the green pastures of this area.

Local authorities said difficulties in accessing the area have hampered rescue operations.

A total of 34 herders and their families were in the affected area, it is not known if children were among the injured.

Every year, local nomads, who belong to the community of Bakarwal, migrate with their herds in search of pasture and to escape the inclement weather.
