Researchers have discovered an ancient Mayan city that until now remained hidden, entwined with a complex of about 400 interconnected settlements. Some of them are more than 3 thousand years old, they are interconnected.

This publication writes The Washington Post.

In the rainforest, 417 Maya settlements were discovered, interconnected by a vast network of roads stretching more than 170 kilometers – an ancient feat considered comparable to the world's first freeway system.

According to scientists involved in the comprehensive study, the construction of this interconnected city began around 1,000 BC.

Technological progress has made it possible to penetrate the dense foliage of the rainforest with unprecedented accuracy. Turning to state-of-the-art lidar technology, which uses light detection and range determination, the researchers were able to see the panoramic expanses of the ancient city.

Earlier it became known that on the Mexican peninsula of Yucatan, archaeologists found the ruins of an ancient Mayan city. It was discovered at the construction site of the future industrial park.
