National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Friday said the new Parliament building is welcome and looks grand. His remarks came at a time when several opposition parties, including his party, have announced to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building. Abdullah said when he was a Lok Sabha member, many of his colleagues often talked about the need for a new and better Parliament building.

The National Conference leader said in a tweet, "Let's put aside the uproar over its inauguration for a few moments. It (new Parliament building) is welcome. The old Parliament house has been a wonderful contribution, but as someone who worked there for a few years, many of us often talked about the need for a new and better Parliament building.

On Wednesday, 19 opposition parties, including the Congress, the Left parties, the Trinamool Congress, the Samajwadi Party and the Aam Aadmi Party, had announced that they would boycott Prime Minister Narendra Modi's inauguration of the new Parliament building. The National Conference is among the signatories to the joint letter of opposition parties.
