The West is considering a scenario according to which only a part of Ukraine can be admitted to the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO), as it was with West Germany in 1955.

This publication writes The New York Times.

For Ukraine, much will depend on the situation on the front after the counteroffensive, as well as on whether it will lead to a lasting ceasefire between the parties, stability of borders, or even peace negotiations.

"West Germany is an example of a country that joined NATO by being divided. If Ukraine fails to force the Russian army to retreat from the occupied territories, then a weighty argument in favor of a ceasefire will be the offer of NATO membership to Ukraine without cities under occupation," the author of the article writes.

In the run-up to the NATO summit in Vilnius, more and more countries are discussing the scenario West Germany took to ensure its security. The example of West Germany also indicates that NATO can admit a country that has "significant and unresolved territorial problems." Then the USSR also complained and said that it was very dangerous, but could not prevent West Germany from joining NATO.

However, other experts believe that it is currently not fashionable to compare Germany with World War II and modern Ukraine. Then the Western and Eastern parts of the country were recognized as separate states and were not in a state of war.

If a counteroffensive and numerous Russian losses do not force Putin to retreat, the West is considering admitting to NATO only that part of Ukraine that will not be under occupation.

Such a model can be supported by those forces in NATO who advocate an early end to the war, as well as China and India. In this case, the issue of territorial integrity of Ukraine would remain for the future.

"NATO membership will strengthen peace and allow for reconstruction, private investment and the return of many refugees... But the whole point of Ukraine's admission to NATO will be to make sure that Russia does not attack Ukraine again, because in this war we have seen that NATO is the only form of deterrence that has worked so effectively far against Russia.

We will remind, earlier it was reported that the head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, General Karel Rzehka, called on the public to prepare for the "bad scenario" of Ukraine's counteroffensive.

In addition, we previously reported that the head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov said that Ukraine currently has a minimum of weapons for the upcoming counteroffensive, but we still have to wait.
