The general strike by education workers in Romania continues for the fifth consecutive day, and street protests are sweeping more and more counties, the Hotnews website reported, adding that a new big rally in Bucharest is expected next week.

The leader of the Federation of Trade Unions in Education, Marius Nistor, told the newspaper that a march is planned for Tuesday, which will run along the route from Victoria Palace (government building) to the Cotroceni Palace (the presidency building). According to him, it is expected that more than 11,00 people will participate in this demonstration, which is planned for the period from 16.00 to 20.000.

Thousands of teachers protest in Bucharest; Protesters refused to end the general strike.

"The messages received from the schools are very clear: even more colleagues will come than they were on Thursday, both from Bucharest and from counties like Cluj, Teleorman, Braila and Galati," Nistor said. He also said that the percentage of striking teachers is rising.

Since May 22, teachers in Romania have been on general strike. They are demanding a 25 percent pay rise, but their request was rejected by the government. Yesterday in Bucharest there was another mass protest of teachers.

Today, several thousand teachers protested in front of the prefectures in Craiova, Sibiu, Suceava, Timisoara, Iasi, Hunedoara and others, and protests are planned for Monday in other cities such as Galati and Braila, the leader of the Federation of Education Trade Unions said.

"I tell you for sure that as long as the general strike lasts, there will be no activity in schools and there is solidarity between parents and students and teachers, because education should be a priority. Currently, there is no talk of resumption of activities in educational institutions. The decision belongs to those who have signed up to start the strike: we will not return," Nistor said.
