President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded to a petition to legalize partnerships for same-sex couples. He stressed that the Ministry of Justice is already working on this.

This is stated in the president's response on the website of electronic petitions.

Zelensky stressed that Ukraine is moving towards European standards, which are based on respect for the rights and personal freedoms of citizens.

"Considering a petition on same-sex marriage last summer, I emphasized that according to the Constitution of Ukraine, marriage is based on the free consent of a woman and a man (Article 51). In conditions of martial law or a state of emergency, the Constitution of Ukraine may not be amended (Article 157 of the Constitution of Ukraine). Therefore, I appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine with a proposal to work out the issue of introducing the institution of registered civil partnership," the president wrote.

Zelensky added that the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine is currently working on a comprehensive legislative introduction of the institution of civil partnership. The President also addressed the Verkhovna Rada with a proposal to consider bills on the legalization of partnerships for same-sex couples.

Recall, Zelensky is asked to increase the vacation period for the military.
