In Kyiv, police and concerned Kyiv residents stopped traffic to move a brood of ducklings with a duck across the road. A cute video was published on social networks: a duck with a dozen ducklings crosses the road on Poshtova Square, accompanied by Kyiv residents and police officers.

Operation to save ducklings

The duck family rushed to the Dnieper from the Kiev funicular.

"On Poshtova Square, a woman ran up to the police. She said that there was a duck with ducklings in front of the traffic light and could go under the wheels of cars because the red light was on. It will be a pity if the ducklings start. Police officers ran to stop the movement, but a group of people had already taken the ducklings into a ring and led them across the street, stopping the cars. Together they transferred ducklings to the Church of the Nativity of Christ. A duck with a brood rested behind the building of the temple, somewhere in the direction of the Dnieper," the police of the Podolsky district told TSN.ua.

In the Kiev zoo we were told that the duck sat ducklings somewhere on the slopes of the Dnieper, possibly near the funicular.

"Usually ducks hatch ducklings on slopes, where there are no predators. And when the baby grows up, it leads them to the river, this is their feeding zone. It is very cool that the people of Kiev reacted in such a way and helped the brood to get to the water. On the water for ducks and ducklings are more likely to survive. There are no rats, cats or dogs that can attack them. Their only enemies on the water are crows and gulls. In nature, the duck hides in the reeds, but there is a problem with this in the Kiev area, it is only in the depths of Trukhaniv Island," Kirill Trantin, director of the Kiev Zoo, told TSN.ua.

Ducklings in a box

Trantin adds that last week 10 ducklings in a box were brought to the zoo.

"Caring people actually threw them at us. This should not be done, because the zoo is not a shelter for ducklings. We usually took them to our lake. We had a duck living there, whose ducklings disappeared. She accepted them as relatives. Even one duck now took to protect this baby. But do not take ducklings if you saw them somewhere in the city. The duck is somewhere nearby, it can be scared and hide. But she will definitely come to her little ones. Therefore, they do not need to be touched," the zoo director explained to us.
