Two-time lottery winner explains origin of his good luck 0:51

(CNN) -- How can a losing lottery ticket win a big prize? It happened to a Michigan man who played a multimillion-dollar lottery game several times and lost, but still won $100,000.

The Wayne County man, who preferred to remain anonymous, cashed out using his previously failed tickets as part of second-chance draws for the Michigan Lottery's $6 million jackpot.

"I had been playing the $6 million jackpot a lot, so when I heard there was a second-chance component to the game, I thought I might give it a try," the player told the Michigan Lottery.

Players can participate by scanning non-winning tickets into the state lottery's mobile app ticket reader for each of the 10 draw participation periods, according to the Michigan Lottery website.

Each non-winning ticket in the $6 million jackpot is eligible for a second chance to win a prize ranging from $500 to $100,000.

The 43-year-old winner was selected in a random draw on April 27.

At first I didn't think I had won.

"One day I received an email from the lottery informing me that I had won a $100,000 prize," he said in a press release. "I thought it was a joke."

He called to confirm if the email was a scam and indeed it was.

"I was shocked," he said. "Winning still doesn't seem real, and I don't think I'll take it in for a while."
