Late last night, a man with a criminal record poured gasoline in front of a mosque in the southeastern German city of Dresden and tried to set it on fire, DPA reported, citing a police spokesman.

The thirty-four-year-old man has been detained and an investigation into attempted arson has been launched.

The motives for the act are currently unknown, the agency notes.

Eyewitnesses called 911 after seeing the man spilling gasoline in front of the mosque, which was full of worshippers, the agency added.
