The Coronation of King Charles III

Charles III, full name Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor, is king and statesman was watched by an average of 18 million TV viewers in Britain, according to figures from the Barb group, cited by the BBC.

That's fewer than those who watched Elizabeth II's funeral last fall and Princess Diana's funeral in 1997.

The coronation was broadcast live on several British television channels between 11.00 and 13.00 GMT on Saturday.

It peaked at nearly 20.5 million midway through the ceremony, when the crown was placed on the king's head, but otherwise an average of 18 million watched the event across 11 channels and services, including the BBC's two main channels, ITV and Sky News.

By comparison, the funeral of the King's mother, Elizabeth II, was watched by an average of 26.5 million viewers.

Millions watched the coronation of Elizabeth II on television in 1953, but because there is no reliable data it is difficult to draw comparisons with Saturday's ceremony.

However, based on research done in 1953 by the BBC, it can be assumed that around 20 million Britons witnessed the event.

However, the absolute record holder as a television audience remains the funeral of the king's ex-wife, Princess Diana.

31 million viewers watched it on BBC and ITV in 1997, BNR informs.
