Although much remains to be clarified about the exact circumstances of the attack, the group believes that this attack on the individual and the prosecution is a matter that directly affects the rule of law.

Institutions in a democratic state must be able to function without intimidation.

The group welcomes the swift initiation of an investigation into this attack by the Bulgarian authorities.

Given the seriousness, complexity and specialized expertise required to clarify the circumstances and identify the perpetrators, the group welcomes the request of the Bulgarian authorities for Europol's participation in the investigations and urges the authorities to seek all international support necessary to conduct swift and transparent investigations.
