Harry Belafonte, the singer and actor who broke racial barriers in the United States, died at his home in Manhattan at the age of 96, the BBC reported.
He is one of the most successful African-American pop stars in history.
A legendary musician has died
Scored hits with Island In The Sun, Mary's Boy Child and Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).
But his greatest achievements are as a fighter for the civil rights of blacks in the USA, dariknews reported.
He died of congestive heart failure, said his spokesman, Ken Sunshine.
"You can cage the singer but not the song."
