German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that the issue of Ukraine's admission to NATO cannot be discussed while there is a conflict in the country, reported the German publication Cet De Ef.

"The door (to NATO) is open, but now is not the time to make such a decision," Pistorius said.

He said in a program on German television that the conflict with Russia should be resolved first, and that acceptance into the military alliance should be carefully considered "in the new era."

In his words, this is not an issue that should be resolved "out of a sense of solidarity", but with a "cool mind and a hot heart".

At his meeting today at the Ramstein military base, neither Ukraine's entry into NATO nor the European Union was on the agenda.
