While many B-town celebrities including Bollywood stars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Alia Bhatt, cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma among others have lost their blue ticks.

Till now microblogging site Twitter used to give verified blue checkmarks under 'Notable' category without any charge.

The concept of Twitter Blue or the business-focused Twitter Verified Organization came into being after Elon Musk acquired Twitter.

Under this, any business entity or individual can get their Twitter handle verified by paying the prescribed fee.

In its earlier state, the blue tick served as a way to protect celebrities from impersonation and combat misinformation.

Earlier in March, Twitter posted from its official handle, 'On April 1, we will begin shutting down our legacy verified program and removing the legacy verified checkmark.

To keep their blue checkmark on Twitter, people can sign up for Twitter Blue.

Twitter first introduced the blue check mark system in 2009.

Its purpose is to help users identify that accounts of celebrities, politicians, companies and brands, news organizations and other 'public interest' accounts are genuine, and not fake or parody accounts.

But under the new rule, anyone can get the blue checkmark, all they have to do is subscribe to the Twitter Blue service and pay the prescribed fee.

In this way, now parody accounts have also become verified blue checkmarks.
