The operation was carried out southeast of Sicily, in severe weather conditions.

More than 100 rescued migrants have already been transported to the Sicilian city of Catania by a ship of the European border service Frontex, reports ANSA.

Another 200 of those rescued are expected to arrive there this morning, while the remaining 300 are said to be traveling to the Sicilian port of Augusta.
