A ruby weighing 55.22 carats (11 grams) will be sold at Sotheby's auction in New York.

With a previous estimate of more than $30.3 million, this ruby could become the most valuable gem of its kind ever to be auctioned.

This is reported by CNN.

The auction will take place in June.

The stone is called Estrela de Fura ("Star of Fura").

Sothebyʼs auction house described this ruby as extremely rare.

The stone was found by Canadian colored gemstone company Fura Gems at one of its mines in Mozambique in July 2022.

The company's CEO, Dev Shetty, said that a stone of this size and quality is "unbelievable."

The stone originally weighed 101 carats—almost double its cut weight—and was the largest gem-quality ruby ever found.

Before the stone is released to the market, it is cut into a symmetrical shape and polished to remove impurities and improve color and luster.

We will remind, at the Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong, an extremely rare pink Williamson Pink Star

diamond

was sold for 57.7 million dollars .

The name of the stone is a reference to another piece of jewelry given to the late Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain for her wedding, which probably helped to double the original price of the lot.
