Will there be an additional weekend in Ukraine for the May holidays of 2023

Every year in May, Ukrainians get two additional days off when public holidays are celebrated — May 1 (Labor Day) and May 9 (Victory over Fascism Day).

May 1 falls on Monday, and May 9 falls on Tuesday.

However, Ukraine is still under martial law, which was extended by presidential order from February 19 to May 20, 2023.

Therefore, according to the law of Ukraine "

On the organization of labor relations under martial law

", all additional days off are canceled during the period of martial law in the country.

That is, Ukrainians will rest only on Saturday and Sunday and will have 8 days off in May.

However, each employer can make individual decisions.

In non-state companies, managers have the right (although they don't have to) to approve extra days off for the May 2023 holiday to allow workers to rest.

If martial law is not extended after May 20, 2023, then the next additional weekend awaits Ukrainians as early as the first month of summer.

In particular, the Trinity is celebrated on June 4, which falls on a Sunday, and therefore the day off can traditionally be moved to Monday.
