Former US Secretary of State under Donald Trump's presidency, Mike Pompeo, said that he is not optimistic about the UN.
He stated this during his visit to Kyiv on April 3.
The American politician took part in the discussion "Support of Ukraine by the United States of America - what needs to be done and why it is important", writes Radio Svoboda.
Pompeo said that the organization may have made sense when it was created, but now it is "fundamentally broken."
"I am not optimistic about the UN.
It may have made sense when it was created, but we have seen the UN Human Rights Council run by the Iranians.
We saw the Venezuelans in charge of human rights at the UN alongside the Iranians who treated women as property and ran the UN Human Rights Council.
We see this time and time again.
Today, the UN will not confront the fact that the Chinese Communist Party is holding a million Muslims in concentration camps in the western part of the country.
The organization is fundamentally broken," Mike Pompeo said.
According to the former US Secretary of State, the membership of China and Russia in the UN Security Council is a "relic" of the past, because both countries disregard international law.
"It is already a relic of the time that the Chinese Communist Party and Russia occupy two seats in the UN Security Council and are two countries that do not intend to abide by international law.
They are unlikely to obey.
I think this is a mockery of what was.
Because if you look at the UN mission, when it was created, very noble ideas were laid, which are contained in the UN Charter.
However, we can now see that this institution is broken.
But I have a theory on how to move forward," Pompeo summed up.
We will remind that
Russia began to chair the UN Security Council on April Fool's Day
.
Let us add that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the head of Ukrainian diplomacy Dmytro Kuleba reacted earlier to the beginning of the chairmanship of the Russian Federation in the UN Security Council.
The leader of the state said that "terrorists must lose, and not preside anywhere."
The head of the Foreign Ministry emphasized that Russia is illegally in the UN Security Council, so it should not chair there either.
