Thousands of people took to the streets of Lisbon and other cities

on Saturday, April 1, to protest against soaring rents and housing prices.

Portugal is one of the poorest countries in Western Europe, with more than 50% of workers earning less than €1,000 a month last year, according to the government.

The minimum wage is 760 euros.

The current inflation rate in Portugal is 8.2%.

The average cost of renting a one-room apartment in Lisbon is about 1,350 euros.

According to the European Statistical Agency Eurostat, from 2010 to 2022, real estate prices in Portugal soared by more than 75%, the cost of renting housing - by almost 25%
