A United Arab Emirates spacecraft has created a detailed map

of Mars

that shows the planet's geological features as seen from orbit.

This is reported by Space.com.

The high-resolution map could help scientists answer a number of pressing questions about Mars, including how it became arid and "barren" despite once being rich in liquid water.

The map of Mars was created by a group of scientists led by New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) and the Center for Space Science of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The researchers used data collected from the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), also known as Hope or Al-Amal, in orbit around Mars.

The team of scientists used more than 300 observations made during one Martian year (two Earth years).

The map shows polar ice caps, mountains and dormant volcanoes, as well as the remains of ancient rivers, lakes and valleys that were filled with liquid water about 3.5 billion years ago.

It will be recalled that researchers found out when and how life disappeared

 on Mars.
