The funeral services of multi-time rowing champion Ángel Fournier Rodríguez, the best for more than a decade in Cuba, took place this weekend.

The exalted athlete died several days ago in Texas, United States, from where he was transferred to his native Caimanera, a municipality in the province of Guantánamo.

Born on December 31, 1987, his death occurred on March 16 in the American city at the age of 35.

Fournier participated in three Olympic Games: Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro 2016, and won three medals in the world rowing championships held between 2013 and 2017.

The giant from Guantanamo won five gold and two silver medals in the Pan American Games in individual scull, double scull and four scull modalities.

Fournier Rodríguez was buried in the cemetery of the Caimanera municipality, where family, friends and a large group of athletes, teachers and Inder workers accompanied him to say goodbye.
