Patna:

Voting was held on Friday for three teachers and two graduate constituencies of the Bihar Legislative Council.

Voting was held at 631 polling stations in different parts of the state.

State Election Commission sources said that a total of 2,75,436 voters exercised their franchise.

The counting of votes will take place on April 5.

Elections to Gaya and Kosi teachers' constituencies and Saran and Gaya graduate seats were necessitated as their respective members are due to retire in May.

While one seat fell vacant after the death of the MLC. 

The State Legislative Council has 75 seats and its members are elected from the constituencies of the assembly, teachers, graduates and local bodies.

Apart from this, some members are nominated by the Governor on the recommendations of the State Government.

JDU has three seats in Gaya and Kosi teachers constituencies and Saran and Gaya graduate seats and the party has contested all these seats.

At the same time, the Rashtriya Janata Dal contested from the Gaya graduate constituency which is currently held by Awadhesh Narayan Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who is challenged by Puneet Kumar Singh, son of RJD President Jagdanand Singh.

JDU MLCs Virendra Narayan Yadav (Saran graduate), Sanjeev Shyam Singh (Gaya teacher) and Sanjeev Kumar Singh (Kosi teacher) have tried to retain their seats.

The JDU is challenged by BJP's Ranjan Kumar from the Kosi teachers constituency, while in Saran graduate, the saffron party has fielded senior leader Mahachandra Prasad Singh.
