The Peruvian Congress

postponed yesterday the decision to begin a formal vacancy motion process

against President Dina Boluarte

, for her alleged responsibility for the deaths of civilians during protests against her government and the legislative body after the deposition and arrest of the president. Pedro Castillo, reported the newspaper

La República

.

Now a vote and a debate are expected for the next legislative session, indicated a tweet from Congress, quoted by the newspaper on its news portal.

It is not yet clear when the next session will take place, although it is likely to start in a matter of days, the newspaper detailed.

Congressional leader José Williams Zapata initially signaled that the impeachment issue could be decided yesterday.

The path to an impeachment is uncertain.

If the request obtains 52 votes, Boluarte will be invited a week later to Congress to defend herself in person or through her lawyer.

Then 87 votes would be needed, out of a total of 130 parliamentarians, to remove her from it.

Congressmen from left-wing benches presented a request for presidential removal on January 25, appealing to the constitutional grounds of permanent moral incapacity to hold office.

The request indicates that "never in the history of Peru has a government in such a short time assassinated more than 40 people in demonstrations against the management of an Executive."

The protests have left 67 dead, 49 of them civilians who died in clashes with the security forces since last December 7

, when Castillo was deposed and arrested after trying to dissolve Congress to avoid a motion of no confidence that was already brewing.
