CM Himanta withdraws remarks inside the House after Congress complaint

Guwahati:

The Assam unit of the Congress on Wednesday filed a breach of privilege notice against Rahul Gandhi in the assembly for a comment he made during the debate on disqualification of the state's chief minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma from the Lok Sabha.

The Congress Legislature Party lodged a complaint with the Principal Secretary of the Assam Legislative Assembly, following which Sharma took back the remarks inside the House.

However, the Congress has not yet withdrawn the breach of privilege notice and instead of withdrawing the statement, has demanded an apology from the chief minister.

In the letter of complaint sent to the Principal Secretary of the Assembly, the Congress said, "Today in the House, the Leader of the House Dr. Himanta Sharma has said that he is aware of the discussion that took place in the ACLP (Assam Congress Legislature Party) room. , He has also stated that some Hon'ble members ACLP have informed him about the decision taken in the CLP meeting held on 28th March, 2023. We the members of ACLP feel that this is a wrong statement by the Leader of the House. Hence , we the member of ACLP commit a breach of privilege against Dr. Himanta (sic), Leader of the House."

This letter was signed by 20 MLAs.

He urged the principal secretary to take "further action" as per the law.

Earlier, there was an uproar in the Assam Legislative Assembly after the Congress moved an adjournment motion to discuss the disqualification of Rahul Gandhi from the Lok Sabha after the court's decision.

Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia presented the notice and said, "We want to send a resolution to the President of India requesting him to uphold the Constitution. The Constitution is equal for all and the executive has to act impartially to protect it." Needed."

Responding to the motion, Himanta said, "It is unprecedented that we are here expressing opinion on a judicial matter. I know that last night the decision was taken by the Congress Legislature Party to create ruckus here."

Rakibul Hussain, deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party, objected to the statement.
